MINIMALISM CAKE
Cake is a form of sweet food made from flour, sugar, and other ingredients, that is usually baked. In their oldest forms, cakes were modifications of bread, but cakes now cover a wide range of preparations that can be simple or elaborate, and that share features with other desserts such as pastries, meringues, custards, and pies.

CUPCAKES

A cupcake (also British English: fairy cake; Hiberno-English: bun; Australian English: fairy cake or patty cake) is a small cake designed to serve one person, which may be baked in a small thin paper or aluminum cup. As with larger cakes, frosting and other cake decorations such as fruit and candy may be applied.
HOW TO DECORATE A CAKE
So you’re thinking about decorating a cake. Maybe you’ve done it before, maybe you haven’t. But either way, you’re no expert. Sound about right? Great! You’ve come to the right place. We’ve put together this simple guide that focuses on six specific tips to decorating a cake for the beginning home baker.
Since this is a beginner’s guide, we won’t even bother discussing fondant icing, as it is beyond the scope of a beginner cake decorator, and instead, focus on buttercream.
Note: These general techniques are the same for other whipped frostings as well.
Tools you’ll need:
- Rotating cake turntable: Not absolutely essential, but will make your task significantly easier.
- Serrated cake or bread knife: For leveling and splitting layers.
- Offset palette knife: For applying frosting without dragging your fingers through it.
- Pastry bag with tips: You can use ziploc bags, but this doesn’t work as well.
- Cake smoother/scraper: For smoothing frosting and making decorative markings and patterns.

HOW TO BAKE A CAKE
There’s nothing like the taste of a cake you made in your own kitchen. Baking a cake is as simple as measuring ingredients, mixing them in the right order, and remembering to take the cake out of the oven before it burns. Read on to learn how to bake 3 basic cakes: vanilla pound cake, chocolate cake, and apple cake.

Vanilla Pound Cake
- 1 cup (225 g) of unsalted butter, softened
- 1 cup (225 g) of granulated sugar
- Pinch of salt
- 2 teaspoons (9.9 mL) of vanilla extract
- 5 eggs, room temperature
- 2 cups (240 g) of cake flour (or, you can use 2 cups minus 2 tbsp (234 g) of all-purpose flour plus 2 tbsp (16 g) of cornstarch)
Making Vanilla Pound Cake
1
Gather your ingredients. Pound cake is one of the simplest cakes to bake.
2
Preheat the oven to 325 °F (163 °C) and grease and flour a cake pan. Pound cakes are best baked in deep pans, such as loaf pans or bundt pans. Use butter or shortening to grease the pan. Then, sprinkle a light layer of flour into the pan, rotate the pan until it’s evenly coated, then tap out the excess flour.
3
Cream the butter and sugar. Place the butter and sugar in a mixing bowl and beat them together until the mixture is light, fluffy and creamy.
4
Add the eggs and vanilla. For best results, add the eggs one at a time and beat the mixture in between. Keep beating the mixture until the eggs are completely incorporated.
5
Stir in the cake flour. Keep the electric mixer on low or use a wooden spoon to stir the flour in a bit at a time until it’s just incorporated. Be careful not to overmix it.
6
Pour the batter into the pan. Use a spatula to scrape down the sides of the bowl.
7
Bake the cake for 1 hour 15 minutes. Rotate the pan 180 degrees halfway through the cook time to ensure it bakes evenly. The cake is finished when a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean. Enjoy your delicious homemade cake!
